Specializing in Individual and Couples Therapy in the heart of Toronto

ABOUT CARA

I am a Registered Psychotherapist with 15 years of experience working with individuals, couples and families. I have a strong passion for working with couples who are experiencing conflict, loss of connection or overcoming an affair. Many couples I meet often feel stuck and discouraged in their relationships. I work with couples to help them break the cycle of conflict, repair the trust and rebuild their connection. I use Emotionally Focused Therapy to help you look at the negative cycles that have taken over your relationship, and create new positive patterns of connecting with your partner.  For others, separation has been the step they need to resolve the conflict or give them a chance to find happiness. I have helped many people adjust to separation, grieve the loss of their relationship, create functional co-parenting relationships and work toward new beginnings.

When I work with individuals, they often tell me that they can’t turn off their thoughts or they feel stuck in their head.  We often get overwhelmed with the constant chatter in our minds or with emotions that just become burdensome. I can help you begin to slow down and notice these thoughts and feelings that serve to “hook” you in, and pull you away from who and what is important in your life.  I take a Cognitive – Mindfulness approach to therapy that helps you learn to lessen the impact and influence of difficult thoughts and feelings, and commit to action that improves and enriches your life.  I can help you make sense of your feelings, develop new ideas for coping, and feel more encouraged and empowered. I have successfully helped numerous clients return to work after being away due to stress and mental health related issues.

I integrate a person-centered and experiential approach with other modalities including Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT- Mindfulness-Based Therapy), Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Emotionally Focused Therapy, Gottman Couples Therapy, and Solution-Focused therapy.

I am always enhancing my knowledge and experience through continuing education at workshops, conferences and reading. I also participate in clinical supervision and peer supervision to collaborate and continue to learn from others.

THE PERSONAL SIDE

I know what it is like to live with self-doubt, uncertainty and low self-esteem. I have worked very hard over the years to overcome my own challenges and reach a place of confidence and self-respect. I have learned to let go of other’s judgments and focus on who I am and what I want.

I have reached this place by recognizing the gifts I hold, the strengths I carry, and learning to listen to others around me. I have learned to take care of my own needs and I am now careful to find balance between my work, life and family. I use mindfulness strategies to calm my mind, relax and re-energize. You may often find me walking by the edge of Lake Ontario enjoying the sun, scenery and nature. Looking across the water often reminds me that life is good and the world is much bigger than my troubles of the day.

I live on the east side of Toronto with my husband of 20 years, my 17 year-old son and 14 year-old daughter. My family and friends help to keep me laughing and focused on the fun and joy of life!
